Live from Baghdad (2002)
Live from Baghdad (2002) is an American TV war drama film directed by Mick Jackson and co-written by Robert Wiener, based on his book of the same name. On August 2, 1990, Iraqi forces invade Kuwait City, prompting CNN to select Wiener and his team for coverage. At the Rome International Airport, Wiener meets his producer Ingrid Formanek before arriving in Baghdad on August 23 and settling into their rooms at the Al-Rasheed Hotel. However, they soon realize they are being monitored. Their first story focuses on a young British boy being held captive by Saddam Hussein. As they continue reporting, they face pressure from the Iraqi government. Eventually, Wiener manages to meet with Iraq’s Minister of Information Naji Al Hadithi and asks for equipment and an interview with Hussein. Over time, a friendship develops between Wiener and Al Hadithi as captured in the movie’s storyline.
After being granted permission by the Iraqi government, Wiener and his team conduct interviews with Americans who are being held in the country. These individuals have been deliberately kept in harm’s way by the Iraqis, acting as human shields for potential bombing targets. One of the Americans they speak with is Bob Vinton, who later goes missing, causing concern for Wiener. During this time, Al Hadithi arranges for CBS and Dan Rather to receive an interview with Saddam Hussein. However, instead of this interview, Al Hadithi offers Wiener and his team a trip to Kuwait. They depart for Kuwait on October 17 and land at Jahra Air Force Base. In Kuwait, they focus on reporting on the incubator story at three hospitals. Unfortunately, their efforts are cut short when the Iraqi authorities cancel their planned interviews due to a violation of rules committed by a CNN crew.
