Lock Up (1989) is an American prison action film, directed by John Flynn. The story follows Frank Leone, a mechanic in Hoboken, New Jersey who is coming to the end of his sentence at Norwood – a low-security prison. Although he spends time outside the prison on furlough to fix cars, play football and see his girlfriend Melissa, Leone is suddenly taken from his cell by guards while he sleeps. This forceful transfer is orchestrated by Warden Drumgoole, as payback for an incident where Leone escaped from Drumgoole’s previous post – Treadmore Prison. In addition to this, Leone had also exposed Drumgoole’s mistreatment of prisoners to the press after being refused a one-hour furlough to visit his dying mentor.

The outcome of this incident was twofold: Leone received five extra years in minimum security, while Drumgoole was transferred to Gateway and earned a negative mark on his job record. Unfortunately, Leone faces mistreatment from both guards and dominant inmate Chink Weber, who serves as a trusty for Drumgoole. However, he forms friendships with fellow prisoners Dallas, Eclipse, and First-Base and shows them how he copes with the difficulties of prison life. Together, they work on fixing up a Ford Mustang in the prison shop, which Eclipse affectionately calls ‘Maybelline’. During their conversation, Leone reveals that he ended up in prison after seeking revenge for an attack on his mentor. Despite his initial hesitation, Leone allows First-Base to start the car, but things take a turn when First-Base drives the Mustang out into the prison yard.
