Locke (2013)
Locke (2013), a psychological drama film written and directed by Steven Knight, follows the story of a construction foreman named Ivan Locke. Tom Hardy stars in the title role as he navigates through a series of speakerphone conversations while preparing for a major concrete pour in Birmingham. However, when he receives news that Bethan, someone he had a one-night stand with seven months ago and who is now pregnant, has gone into premature labor, Locke makes the decision to drive to London to be with her during childbirth. Despite his job responsibilities and the fact that his wife and sons are waiting for him at home to watch a football match, Locke is determined not to repeat the same mistake his father made by abandoning him as a child. Although he has no real connection or feelings towards Bethan, he refuses to let her go through labor alone.
As Locke made the one and a half-hour trip from Birmingham to London, he was constantly on his phone. In total, he had 36 calls with various people including his boss Gareth, junior Donal, wife of 15 years Katrina whom he had to confess his infidelity to, sons Eddie and Sean who updated him on a football match he initially planned to watch, and later expressed concern over their mother’s breakdown. He also spoke with medical personnel from St Mary’s maternity unit – first Sister Margaret and then Halil Gullu – who were assisting Bethan through some troubling complications. Additionally, he contacted council head Cassidy and local police authority PC Davids for road closures needed for the 225+ concrete trucks to access the site properly. Lastly, Locke checked in with Bethan during her labor to reassure her.
