Logan Lucky (2017)
Logan Lucky (2017), a heist comedy film, was helmed by the renowned director Steven Soderbergh and written by Rebecca Blunt. Soderbergh famously ended his retirement for this project and distributed it independently through his company, Fingerprint Releasing. The protagonist of the film, Jimmy Logan, is let go from his construction job at Charlotte Motor Speedway. During a visit with his ex-wife Bobbie Jo to see their daughter Sadie rehearse for a beauty pageant, Jimmy discovers that Bobbie Jo and her new spouse are moving to Lynchburg, posing an even greater obstacle for him to see his daughter. Seeking solace, Jimmy goes to a bar owned by his brother Clyde – a veteran of the Iraq War who lost his hand in combat.
Max Chilblain, a pompous British businessman and owner of a NASCAR team, arrives at the scene with his companions and insults Clyde, resulting in a physical altercation with Jimmy. In retaliation, Clyde sets fire to Max’s car using a Molotov cocktail. As they leave, Jimmy shouts ‘cauliflower’, a familiar code-word from their juvenile delinquent days. The following day, Jimmy unveils his plan to rob the Speedway by taking advantage of his knowledge of their pneumatic tube system for transporting money. The plan seems foolproof – break Joe out of prison, blow up the racetrack vault, escape with the cash, return Joe to his cell, and make it to Jimmy’s daughter’s beauty pageant on time. What could possibly go wrong? Well, there is always the looming Logan family curse.
