Long Shot (2019)
Long Shot (2019) is an American romantic comedy film directed by Jonathan Levine. U.S. Secretary of State Charlotte Field learns from President Chambers, a former television actor, that he does not plan on running for a second term as he is trying to break into the movie industry. Seeing an opportunity, she convinces him to endorse her as a potential presidential candidate. Meanwhile, New York City journalist Fred Flarsky’s career takes a turn when his newspaper is purchased by Parker Wembley, a wealthy mogul with opposing political views. Frustrated and unable to find another job, Fred seeks solace in his successful best friend Lance who invites him to a charity fundraiser where Boyz II Men are performing. It turns out to be more than just entertainment for Fred when he crosses paths with Charlotte, who happens to be his former babysitter and childhood crush.
As they catch up, Wembley interrupts them to arrange a meeting with Charlotte. This prompts Fred to vocally criticize Wembley before storming off and tripping down a set of stairs in front of the entire group. Upon reading some of Fred’s columns, Charlotte decides to enlist him as her speechwriter, despite protests from her chief of staff, Maggie. Though skeptical of Charlotte’s dedication to important issues, Fred ultimately accepts the position. However, at an international summit for world leaders in Sweden, Charlotte is pressured by industrialists to alter a speech promoting an environmental campaign. When Fred challenges her decision and threatens to quit on the spot if she follows through with the revision, Charlotte has a change of heart and delivers the original speech to great acclaim.
