Longlegs (2024) is an American horror thriller film written and directed by Osgood Perkins. It stars Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, who also serves as producer through his Saturn Films production company. The story follows a young girl with a Polaroid camera in 1970s Oregon who stumbles upon a car outside her house and is lured by a mysterious voice to the back of the property where she encounters an unsettling man wearing pale makeup. Decades later, newly recruited FBI agent Lee Harker exhibits inexplicable intuition while on duty, accurately identifying the location of a murderer’s home. Testing suggests that Harker may possess clairvoyant abilities, leading to her assignment on a long-standing case involving a string of violent murder-suicides throughout Oregon.
In each instance, the husband kills his family before taking his own life, leaving behind a letter with encrypted Satanic messaging and signed as ‘Longlegs’. Despite a lack of forensic evidence or indication of a home invasion or outside involvement, the handwriting does not match that of any victims. Lee quickly notices a correlation between the families: all had a 9-year-old daughter whose birthday fell on the 14th of the month, and the murders occurred within six days surrounding this date. When plotted on a linear calendar, the dates of the killings create an eerie inverted triangle shape, with only one date missing to complete it. One night while talking to her mother Ruth, Lee catches sight of an enigmatic figure who leaves behind a coded message in honor of her 9th birthday.
