Loop (2020) is an American computer-animated drama short film directed and written by Erica Milsom, with the story being co-written by Adam Burke, Matthias De Clercq, and Milsom. Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it follows the story of Renee, a 13-year-old non-verbal autistic girl. Sitting in a canoe, she plays with a sound app on her phone. When Marcus shows up late to the camp counselor’s instructions, he is partnered with Renee, much to his chagrin. Attempting to impress her with his paddling skills only results in her rocking the boat. Frustrated, Marcus asks what she wants and she guides him to shore so she can touch the reeds. While Renee returns to her phone, Marcus has an idea. Paddling them towards a tunnel, he has Renee play her phone so that the sound reverberates off the walls. Initially enjoying the experience, Renee becomes overwhelmed when a speedboat races by and disrupts the peaceful noise.
After frantically escaping the tunnel, they crash onto the waterside. Renee has a meltdown, tossing her phone into the lake and hiding under the canoe, while Marcus looks on with confusion. In a gesture of comfort, Marcus pulls up a reed and places it near the canoe for Renee to see. He sits close by until she calms down. As she sits up, Renee takes the reed and shares a giggle with Marcus while recreating the sound of her lost phone. Together, they return to camp in the canoe. In a post-credits scene, Renee’s recovered phone rests in a bowl of rice as she receives a message from Marcus, inviting her for another canoeing adventure.
