Love and Death (1975)
Love and Death (1975), an American comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen, follows the story of Boris Grushenko, a cowardly scholar who is forced to join the Russian army when Napoleon invades Austria during the Napoleonic Wars. Despite his initial reluctance, Boris accidentally becomes a war hero. He then returns home and ends up marrying his widowed cousin Sonja, who reluctantly promises to marry him for one night in order to make him happy before he potentially dies in a duel. However, much to her dismay, Boris survives the duel and their marriage is characterized by philosophical discussions but financial struggles.
Their life together faces an upheaval as Napoleon invades the Russian Empire. While Boris desires to flee, his wife cannot bear the thought of their plans to begin a family being disrupted by the invasion. She devises a scheme to assassinate Napoleon at his headquarters in Moscow, much to Boris’ dismay. The two engage in a philosophical debate, using clever language to express their thoughts, and ultimately Boris reluctantly agrees to go along with the plan. Despite their valiant efforts, they are unable to succeed and Sonja manages to escape arrest while Boris tragically meets his end.
