Love Is Strange (2014)
Love Is Strange (2014), directed by Ira Sachs, is an American romantic drama that premiered in the non-Competition programme of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. It was also screened in the Panorama section of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. The story follows Benjamin Arthur Hull ‘Ben’ and George Esteban Correa, a same-sex couple from Manhattan who decide to get married after being together for 39 years. Despite facing normal problems that any couple may encounter, their marriage causes them to face discrimination when George’s Catholic school music teacher job is terminated by Father Raymond due to their marriage. Having known each other for 12 years, George and Raymond’s relationship is put to the test. The loss of George’s salary forces the couple to sell their New York apartment as they can no longer afford the mortgage.
However, this process proves difficult as real estate agent commissions and building board fees make it challenging for rentals in good buildings. Together, Ben and George’s combined income from pension and private lessons brings in $3000 a month. Due to their current financial situation, they have resorted to seeking temporary shelter from friends and family, which has caused them to be separated. This living arrangement is expected to change once George secures a job and the couple finds a new place. However, since Ben and George sold their apartment before the 5-year mark, they had to pay a 25% flip tax to the co-operative, resulting in a net profit of only $17,535. The families are displeased with Ben and George for using all their savings on an extravagant wedding and honeymoon in Petra, Jordan, ultimately leading to their current predicament.
