It is based on the 2005 non-fiction book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy. The story follows Jamie Randall, who gets fired from his job at an electronics store in Pittsburgh after having an affair with his manager’s girlfriend. His brother Josh helps him get a new job as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Pfizer. Jamie attends their training program and begins selling Zoloft to doctors. However, he faces rejection and disappoints his regional manager, Bruce, who had high hopes for him in the Chicago market. In an attempt to impress Bruce, Jamie tries to convince Dr. Knight to prescribe Zoloft instead of Prozac by flirting with his employees and secretly disposing of the Prozac samples.
After Knight permits Jamie to observe a patient, Maggie Murdock, who suffers from early onset Parkinson’s disease, he catches Jamie’s attention. Through one of Knight’s assistants, who Jamie had previously seduced, he is able to obtain Maggie’s contact information. They decide to go on a date and mutually agree that they aren’t seeking a serious relationship. Instead, they begin a sexual relationship. However, trouble arises when top-selling Prozac representative Trey Hannigan attacks Jamie after discovering that he has been discarding his samples. During this ordeal, Maggie discloses that Trey is her former boyfriend and also shares a rumor she heard about Jamie’s company developing a new drug for erectile dysfunction. After confirming with Bruce that Viagra is being marketed by their company.
