Lucky Them (2013), an American comedy-drama film by Megan Griffiths, follows Ellie Klug, a music critic in her 40s at Stax, a dying underground magazine. For her next assignment, Giles, her editor, tasks Ellie with writing about Matthew Smith’s mysterious disappearance and assumed suicide on its 10th anniversary. While most people believe he is dead, Ellie, who was Matthew’s childhood sweetheart and last remained with him before he vanished, remains hopeful of finding him. After an online tip leads her to a potential lead on Matthew’s whereabouts, Giles gives Ellie a thousand dollars to pay the source. However, Ellie becomes preoccupied with Lucas Stone, a struggling musician who expresses interest in her. In the midst of their interactions, she accidentally leaves the money behind and boards her bus without it. Despite his attempts to reach her for clarification, Lucas misconstrues the situation and uses the money to record a demo tape as he believed it was meant as encouragement from Ellie.

To get the money to bribe her source, Ellie turns to Charlie, a wealthy and socially awkward acquaintance from their brief past relationship. In exchange for his financial assistance, Charlie asks to film Ellie’s search for Matthew Smith as part of a documentary. Unfortunately, their source turns out to be a con artist and the documentary project falls apart when they hit a dead end. It’s later revealed that Charlie only lent Ellie the money because he was interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with her. Meanwhile, Ellie starts dating Lucas but becomes insecure as he achieves success. One night, after Lucas fails to show up for Charlie’s wedding, Ellie assumes he has left her and ends up sleeping with another man. However, in a twist of fate, Lucas returns and confesses that he had simply misunderstood the situation and thought he was borrowing the money from Ellie instead of taking it without permission.
