Lucky You (2007)
Lucky You (2007), an American drama film directed by Curtis Hanson, stars Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore and Robert Duvall. The story follows Huck Cheever, a young and skilled poker player in Las Vegas who is plagued by his strained relationship with his father, L.C. Cheever, a previous World Series of Poker Champion. Despite being a regular in the Vegas poker scene, Huck needs $10,000 to enter the World Series of Poker Main Event. After a successful night at the Bellagio hotel’s poker room, Huck attends a party where he meets aspiring singer Billie Offer. However, Billie’s older sister Suzanne warns her about Huck’s reputation as ‘hustle 10, commitment zero’. As Huck continues to rack up wins at the tables, L.C. unexpectedly returns from a trip to the South of France. Their reunion is tense and they end up facing each other in a high stakes game of heads-up poker at the Bellagio.
Loan shark Roy Durucher boasts to Huck about his poker skills, despite his tendency to go all out and not take his time. He offers to back Huck in the $10,000 main-event with a 60% (Roy) — 40% (Huck) split of any winnings, but Huck declines. Unable to borrow money from his friend Jack, Huck turns to Suzanne’s for help. To his surprise, he meets Billie instead, who receives good news about landing a singing gig at a club. In light of this news, Huck suggests celebrating and teaches Billie how to play poker at Binion’s Horseshoe. L.C., a familiar face from Huck’s past, arrives and reveals that he has redeemed a wedding ring that belonged to Huck’s late mother, which Huck had previously pawned. Unfortunately, luck is not on Huck’s side as he ends up losing all his winnings.
