Macho Callahan (1970)
Macho Callahan (1970), a Mexican-American Western directed by Bernard L. Kowalski, tells the story of Diego Callahan, also known as ‘Macho’, who is imprisoned during the war. Seeking retribution for his incarceration, he travels to Texas in search of the man responsible. Along the way, he gets into a heated altercation with David Mountford, a one-armed Confederate Army colonel, and ends up killing him in front of his wife, Alexandra. Fueled by her desire for revenge, Alexandra puts a $1,000 bounty on Callahan’s head. She enlists Duffy’s help to find him – recognizing him by the distinctive yellow boots he wears – and they set off on a journey through Confederate Texas. Eventually locating Callahan, Duffy challenges him to a game of horseshoes for money.
However, when Alexandra goes to find Duffy, she discovers that Callahan has already hanged him. Working at Harry Wheeler’s casino, Alexandra writes letters for cowboys who are unable to read or write. When Wheeler agrees to hire a team of bounty hunters, Alexandra notices Callahan at the casino and befriends a young cowboy named Yancy. She convinces Yancy to stand up for her after feeling that her honor has been insulted. A fight breaks out when Yancy confronts Callahan during a poker game, but Callahan manages to escape in the commotion. Determined to catch him, Alexandra heads off alone and eventually crosses paths with Callahan and his partner. Despite being beaten by Callahan and bearing scars on her face, Alexandra chooses to stay at his cabin.
