Mad Love (1995)
Mad Love (1995), directed by Antonia Bird, is an American teen romantic drama set in Seattle. Matt Leland is a responsible high school senior living with his hardworking father and 9-year-old twins, assuming the parental role for his absent mother. His interest is piqued by the girl across the lake who he observes through his telescope jet skiing at night. After discovering her name is Casey Roberts and she’s new to their high school from Chicago, Matt asks her out to a concert. At first, Casey is angered by Matt’s use of the telescope, but after he apologizes, the two opposites begin a passionate romance.
Matt is drawn to Casey’s spontaneous and lively personality. However, she reveals to him that she struggles with intense emotions that can lead to destructive behavior. For example, in an attempt to get Matt’s attention while he was taking the SATs, Casey set off the fire alarm at school and ended up getting suspended. This upset her parents, especially her controlling father, who decided to send her away to a boarding school. That night, Casey took too many sleeping pills and was admitted to a psychiatric ward against her will. Despite his father’s disapproval, Matt goes to visit Casey in the hospital instead of focusing on his studies and caring for his younger siblings.
