Madagascar (2005)

In bustling New York City, Alex the lion resides in the Central Park Zoo as a popular attraction known as ‘King of New York’. He shares his days with his close-knit group of friends: Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippopotamus, and Marty the zebra, who is Alex’s best pal. However, Marty becomes restless with his mundane routine and yearns for a taste of adventure. On his tenth birthday, despite attempts from his friends to cheer him up, Marty learns that the zoo’s penguins – Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private – are plotting an escape to Antarctica. Eager for a change of scenery, Marty decides to tag along. As he heads towards Grand Central Station with plans to catch a train to Connecticut, Alex, Melman, and Gloria pursue him in hopes of persuading him to return. The situation becomes even more chaotic when they are joined by two chimpanzees named Mason and Phil. In response to pressure from anti-captivity activists, the zoo is compelled to transport their escaped animals by sea to a wildlife sanctuary in Kenya. While en route, the penguins break free from their crate and take control of the ship in an attempt to sail to Antarctica. This causes the containers holding Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria to fall overboard. The animals are eventually washed up on the island of Madagascar where they encounter a group of lemurs led by King Julien XIII. The predatory fossa attack the lemurs but are frightened away by Alex’s formidable appearance. Alex blames Marty for their current situation and attempts to find help to return to civilization. Meanwhile, Marty revels in the wild surroundings and is soon joined by Gloria and Melman who also enjoy being on the island. Eventually, Alex comes around but without his usual supply of raw meat from the zoo, his hunger takes over and he begins exhibiting predatory behavior. In order to protect themselves from the fossa, Julien convinces his fellow lemurs to befriend the zoo animals despite warnings from Maurice about Alex’s natural instincts as a predator.
