Maelström (2000), a Canadian absurdist psychological drama film written and directed by Denis Villeneuve, tells the story of Bibiane Champagne, a successful 25-year-old businesswoman in Quebec during the autumn of 1999. As she is being gutted alive by a fishmonger, Bibiane reflects on her life and the struggles she faces. Despite her achievements as head of three clothing boutiques and being the daughter of a famous person named Flo Fabert, Bibiane has recently had an abortion. During an interview with a journalist, she puts on a confident front but is confronted by her partner and brother Philippe for numerous failures. Luckily, her friend Claire provides support for Bibiane as she battles drug and alcohol addiction. However, one night while driving under the influence, Bibiane accidentally hits Annstein Karson, a 53-year-old Norwegian Canadian fishmonger, and makes the decision to flee the scene.

Injured and stumbling, Annstein makes his way back to his apartment where he ultimately passes away at the kitchen table. Meanwhile, at a restaurant, Claire and Bibiane order octopus but are disappointed to discover it is stale. After investigating, the restaurant staff realizes that their usual supplier of octopus, Annstein, is missing. The police later confirm that they have found him deceased. Bibiane reads about his death in the newspaper and feels guilty enough to consider turning herself in. She shares her thoughts with a stranger on the subway, seeking advice on what to do next. However, he reminds her that turning herself in will not bring Annstein back. Seizing a moment of desperation, she decides to dispose of the evidence by driving her car into a river. Miraculously, she survives and takes it as a sign that she deserves to reclaim her life. In other news, Evian, the son of a fishmonger who had been recently diving in the Manicouagan River, discovers that Annstein has been cremated.
