Magic in the Moonlight (2014)
Written and directed by Woody Allen, Magic in the Moonlight (2014) is a romantic comedy set in 1928. As Wei Ling Soo, an illusionist with a world-renowned magic act, performs to a crowd in Berlin, little do they know that he is actually Stanley, a British man who dons a disguise for his performances. In his dressing room, Stanley is reunited with old friend and fellow illusionist Howard Burkan. Howard invites Stanley to join him on a trip to the French Riviera where the wealthy Catledge family has been beguiled by the clairvoyant Sophie. Howard confesses he has been unable to expose Sophie’s secrets and wonders if she truly possesses supernatural powers. He implores Stanley, known for debunking phony mystics, to help him prove her as a fraud.
Howard and Stanley journey to the French Riviera, where Sophie’s abilities leave Stanley amazed. During a séance, she connects with the deceased head of the Catledge family and astounds Howard when a candle levitates without any apparent trickery. Later on, while visiting Aunt Vanessa in Provence, Sophie impresses Stanley once again by accurately revealing details about her past love affair after holding onto her pearls. This experience finally convinces him of Sophie’s authenticity and prompts him to have a realization: his lifelong rationalism and cynicism have been misguided. Seeking shelter from a rainstorm, they take refuge in an observatory that holds nostalgic memories for Stanley from his childhood. Once the rain stops, they open up the roof and admire the stars together.
