Magnolia (1999)
Magnolia (1999), an American drama film directed and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson, follows Los Angeles police officer Jim Kurring as he investigates a disturbance at a woman’s apartment. Inside, he discovers a body in the closet. A neighborhood boy named Dixon futilely attempts to reveal the identity of the murderer to Jim. Later, Jim visits Claudia Wilson’s apartment after her neighbors call the police during an argument with her estranged father, Jimmy Gator. Despite her erratic behavior and drug use, Jim still asks her out on a date. Meanwhile, Jimmy is dying of cancer and hosts a quiz show called What Do Kids Know?. On the show, child prodigy Stanley Spector is pressured by his father Rick for the prize money and mistreated by the adults who refuse to let him go to the bathroom during a commercial break. As the show continues, Stanley wets himself while Jimmy drinks himself into illness but insists on continuing filming after collapsing.
When Rick berates him for it, Stanley runs away. Donnie Smith, a previous champion of What Do Kids Know?, had his prize money taken by his parents. Now, he has been let go from his job due to performance problems and is enamored with a male bartender sporting braces. Desperate for the bartender’s affections, Donnie concocts a scheme to steal funds from his former boss in order to get braces himself. Meanwhile, Earl Partridge, the show’s ex-producer, is battling cancer. His wife Linda handles his medication while he is attended to by nurse Phil Parma. In a last-ditch effort to reconnect with his son Frank Mackey, who is known as a motivational speaker and ladies’ man, Earl asks Phil for help in locating him. A journalist interviews Frank about his past experiences caring for his dying mother after Earl abandoned them.
