Malcolm X (1992)
Malcolm X (1992) tells the story of an African-American activist and is directed and co-written by Spike Lee. Born in rural Michigan, Malcolm Little is raised by his Grenadian mother and African-American father in a strong household. Tragically, their home is destroyed and Malcolm’s father, a passionate advocate for black rights, is killed by the Black Legion. Despite this injustice, his death is recorded as a suicide and the family receives no compensation. With his mother’s mental health deteriorating, Malcolm and his siblings are placed in protective care. Despite facing numerous challenges, Malcolm excels in school and dreams of becoming a lawyer. However, his teacher discourages him due to the color of his skin.
As a teenager in 1944, Malcolm moves to Boston. Malcolm and Sophia travel to Harlem, where they meet Archie, a local gangster who runs a numbers game. The two become friends and start an illegal racket together. At a club, Malcolm claims to have won a bet, but Archie denies owing him money. A conflict breaks out between the two and Malcolm returns to Boston after an attempt on his life. With the help of Shorty and Peg, Malcolm and Sophia turn to robbery for income. By 1946, they amass a large amount of money from their activities but are eventually caught and arrested. While the women receive two-year sentences as first-time offenders, Malcolm and Shorty are sentenced to 8-10 years.
