Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) is an American fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a sequel to Maleficent (2014) and directed by Joachim Rønning, with a screenplay written by Linda Woolverton, Micah Fitzerman-Blue, and Noah Harpster. Angelina Jolie reprises her role as the iconic title character. After King Stefan’s passing, Aurora has ruled as Queen of the Moors while Maleficent remains its devoted guardian. However, the neighboring kingdom of Ulstead, where Prince Phillip resides, labels Maleficent as a malevolent figure. Her raven and confidant Diaval overhears Phillip proposing to Aurora and informs Maleficent, who advises against their marriage. Despite this, Aurora is determined to prove her wrong. During an intimate dinner hosted by Phillip’s parents, King John and Queen Ingrith, Ingrith brings up the sleeping curse that was once placed on Aurora and mentions King Stefan’s death in a mocking manner. Maleficent manages to maintain her composure in response.
Maleficent openly accuses Maleficent of killing two human fairy poachers who were last spotted near the Moors. This accusation is met with disregard from Ingrith, who seems to underestimate Maleficent’s strong bond with Aurora. As a result, Maleficent becomes enraged and apparently puts a curse on John, causing him to fall into a deep sleep. Despite Maleficent’s insistence that she did not actually curse him, Aurora remains skeptical. Phillip urges his mother to try and break the spell by kissing John, but Ingrith refuses and her half-hearted attempt fails because she does not truly love him. As Maleficent flees the castle, she is shot by Ingrith’s servant Gerda with an iron bullet. Mortally wounded, Maleficent falls into the ocean and is miraculously saved by a mysterious winged creature. She awakens in a hidden cave where other fairies like herself have been living in secrecy. Among them are Conall, a peaceful leader who rescued Maleficent, and Borra, a more aggressive fairy who has no qualms about using violence against humans and was responsible for taking down the poachers near the Moors.
