Man Made Monster (1941)
The American science-fiction horror film, Man-Made Monster (1941), directed by George Waggner, tells the story of a tragic accident. A bus collides with a high power line, resulting in the death of all passengers except for Dan McCormick, who miraculously survives due to his immunity to electricity. McCormick becomes known as Dynamo Dan and is presented in a sideshow exhibit. He catches the attention of Dr. John Lawrence, who takes an interest in studying him. However, Dr. Lawrence’s colleague, the mad scientist Dr. Paul Rigas, has darker motives and aims to create an army of electrobiologically-driven zombies. To achieve this, he administers increasingly higher doses of electricity to McCormick until his mind is destroyed and he becomes reliant on the addictive charges.
As a result, McCormick gains a lethal ability to electrocute anyone he touches, earning him the nickname ‘the touch of death’. Rigas, intrigued by this newfound power, deliberately engineers McCormick’s conviction and execution by electric chair. However, to his surprise, McCormick survives the electrocution and is now even more powerful with a glowing body protected by a rubber suit. His deadly touch leads to the demise of several individuals, including Rigas himself. Tragically, as he becomes entangled on a barbed wire fence, his rubber suit is torn and all of his electrical energy drains out into the wire, resulting in his ultimate demise.
