Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) is a biographical film, directed by Justin Chadwick and penned by William Nicholson. Starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, the movie is based on the autobiography of anti-apartheid activist and former South African President Nelson Mandela. It follows Mandela’s journey from his youth to his time in prison and eventual presidency, as he works to rebuild a country torn apart by the oppressive system of Apartheid. Nelson Mandela, a South African lawyer, initially joins the African National Congress in the 1940s to fight against the oppressive laws of Apartheid.
Following the brutal Sharpeville Massacre, he and his comrades are forced to resort to armed resistance. As a result, they are sentenced to life imprisonment for treason while Mandela’s wife, Winnie, also suffers mistreatment by authorities. Despite being imprisoned for decades, Mandela remains steadfast in his beliefs and continues to fight for justice both within and outside of his confinement. However, as Winnie’s determination turns towards violent tactics over time, Nelson emerges as a prominent leader of the movement. As his release draws near, he faces the challenge of achieving a peaceful victory that will leave his country and its people unharmed.
