Mandy (2018), an action horror film, was both directed and co-written by Panos Cosmatos. Elijah Wood served as producer alongside Cosmatos and Aaron Stewart-Ahn, with the story being conceived by Cosmatos himself. Set in 1983 near the Shadow Mountains, recovering alcoholic Red Miller lives with his girlfriend Mandy Bloom, who works as an artist and author. While Red works as a logger, Mandy holds a day job as a gas station cashier. In their cabin by the lake, Mandy creates intricate fantasy art which greatly impresses Red. One day on her way to work, Mandy catches the eye of Jeremiah Sand, leader of the religious cult known as the Children of the New Dawn. Struck by her beauty, Sand orders his disciple Brother Swan to kidnap Mandy with the assistance of the Black Skulls – a cannibalistic and demonic biker gang known for using potent LSD.

That evening, Swan drives to the lake and uses the mystical Horn of Abraxas to call upon the Black Skulls. He offers them a low-ranking cult member as a sacrifice before they break into Mandy and Red’s home. The cultists Mother Marlene and Sister Lucy then give Mandy drugs and bring her to Sand, a failed musician. He tries to seduce her with his psychedelic folk music, claiming God commanded him to take what he wants. However, Mandy laughs at him, causing him to become infuriated. When Sand and his followers depart, Red manages to free himself and grieves over Mandy’s ashes before returning inside and falling asleep. Upon waking from a nightmare, he drinks a bottle of vodka, tends to his wounds, and screams in agony, grief, and rage.
