Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993), an American black comedy mystery film directed by Woody Allen, follows the story of Larry Lipton, an editor at HarperCollins, and his wife Carol. They have a pleasant interaction with their older neighbors, Paul and Lillian House, in the elevator. The Houses invite them to spend an evening together and during their conversation, the women share their exercise routines. Unfortunately, the next day Lillian unexpectedly passes away from a heart attack, which shocks the Liptons as she seemed to be in good health. As they start noticing odd behavior from Paul after his wife’s death, their suspicion grows. One day, while bringing Paul a dessert, Carol discovers a crematory urn under his kitchen sink that contradicts his story about Lillian’s burial. This leads Carol to take matters into her own hands and investigate further.
She sneaks into the House apartment using a key she stole from the super when Paul is out and begins snooping around. To her surprise, she finds two tickets to Paris and hotel reservations under the name ‘Helen Moss’, leading her to believe that Paul might have been involved in his wife’s death. After dialing the code for the last number called, Carol is greeted by a voice answering ‘Waldron’. Paul arrives and Helen sneaks out undetected after narrowly avoiding being caught when she was snooping. Later, Paul discovers her reading glasses under the bed but Carol claims they were lost during their first visit and were accidentally kicked under the bed. Shocked by his wife’s actions, Larry urges her to stop. Determined to uncover the mystery, Carol enlists the help of their adventurous friend Ted. Together, they locate actress Helen Moss, who they proceed to surveil.
