Manifesto (2015)
Manifesto (2015), a multi-screen film installation, is the brainchild of Julian Rosefeldt, who wrote, produced and directed the project. The film stars Cate Blanchett in 13 distinct roles as she embodies various manifestos. Rosefeldt’s initial research and analysis included a range of textual manifestos, spanning from 19th century works like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’s The Communist Manifesto to more modern pieces such as Jim Jarmusch’s Golden Rules of Filmmaking from 2004. From this vast collection, Rosefeldt carefully selected about 60 manifestos that he found most captivating and relevant, based on their common themes or complementary nature. These texts were then fragmented and reassembled into 12 manifesto collages. 2015, to March 14, 2016. A 90-minute feature version premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017.
The movie incorporates a diverse range of artist manifestos from various eras alongside present-day situations. These manifestos are presented by a cast of 13 individuals, including a teacher, factory employee, dancer, punk rocker, news anchor, scientist, puppeteer, widow, and homeless person. Divided into 13 parts running for 10:30 minutes each, the film features these characters reciting sections of political and artistic manifestos.
