Marriage Story (2019), a drama film written and directed by Noah Baumbach, also produced by David Heyman. The play, helmed by Charlie Barber, successful theater director of Exit Ghost in New York City, stars his wife Nicole who used to be an actress but is now content with not acting. However, their marriage is suffering as they seek mediation and are advised to write down what they appreciate about each other. Despite agreeing to go through the process together, Nicole declines to read her words aloud and they decide to skip counseling altogether. Later, Nicole receives an offer for a lead role in a television pilot in Los Angeles and chooses to leave the company temporarily to live with her mother in West Hollywood, taking their son Henry. Meanwhile, Charlie remains in New York as their play heads to Broadway. Although the couple initially agreed on an amicable separation without lawyers involved, Nicole ends up hiring Nora Fanshaw as her family lawyer and shares her feelings of being disregarded by Charlie and her desires rejected.
Nicole suggests that Charlie slept with Mary Ann, the stage manager of his theater company. During a visit to his family, Charlie shares news of winning a MacArthur Fellowship grant, but this is overshadowed by Nicole’s declaration of divorce. Seeking legal advice, Charlie meets with Jay Marotta, a brash and expensive lawyer who encourages him to fight aggressively. Ultimately, Charlie decides against hiring him and returns to New York. However, Nora calls and cautions him to find legal representation quickly in order to avoid risking losing custody of Henry. Returning to Los Angeles, Charlie hires Bert Spitz, a retired family lawyer known for his empathetic and peaceful approach. As Henry opens up to Charlie about Nicole’s desire to remain in LA instead of returning to New York, he becomes confused and calls Nicole in anger to interrogate her. In response, Nicole reveals that she hacked into his emails and discovered his affair with Mary Ann.
