Mars Attacks! (1996)
Mars Attacks! (1996), an American black comedy science fiction film, was directed by Tim Burton and co-produced by Larry J. Franco. When Earth is suddenly visited by a massive fleet of flying saucers from Mars, President James Dale addresses the nation. Among those following the developing story are talk show host Nathalie Lake and her boyfriend Jason Stone, who try to take advantage of the situation with an interview featuring Professor Donald Kessler, Dale’s scientific advisor. However, their plans are interrupted by a broadcast from the Martian leader. As the Martians make their way towards Pahrump, Nevada to land, various individuals across the country react in different ways – including donut shop employee Richie Norris and his brother Billy-Glenn, flamboyant casino owner Art Land and his wife Barbara, divorced ex-boxer Byron Williams and his ex-wife Louise, and their children Cedric and Neville.
Against the hawkish General Decker’s advice, Dale chooses to welcome the Martians as foreign dignitaries and instructs fellow military officer General Casey to do the same. Among those who volunteer to accompany Casey in greeting the Martians in Nevada is Billy-Glenn, a private in the US Army. Despite a translated message from the Martian ambassador claiming peaceful intentions, chaos ensues when a hippie releases a dove into the air and it is shot down by the ambassador’s ray gun. The peaceful atmosphere quickly turns violent as the Martians turn on the crowd and unleash their ray guns, leaving behind a trail of destruction and abducting Nathalie and her pet chihuahua Poppy. Sadly, many others also meet their demise, including Casey, Jason, and Billy-Glenn who are reduced to mere skeletons.
