Marvin's Room (1996)
Marvin’s Room (1996) is an impactful American drama helmed by Jerry Zaks. John Guare penned the screenplay, adapted from Scott McPherson’s play of the same name. The story revolves around Marvin, a man who suffered a stroke two decades ago and has been confined to his bed ever since. His daughter Bessie has dedicated herself to taking care of him in their Florida home, while his other daughter Lee moved away with her husband to Ohio and has not been in touch with her family since. Unfortunately, Bessie receives devastating news from her doctor – she has leukemia, the same illness that claimed their mother’s life when they were younger. In desperate need of a bone marrow transplant, she reaches out to Lee for help. Lee, in turn, relies on her 10-year-old son Charlie and 17-year-old son Hank for support.
However, rebellious Hank refuses to be tested as a potential match due to his troubled past and current institutionalization for arson. Nonetheless, they all journey to stay with Bessie. Upon realizing she may need to assume responsibility for her father’s well-being, Lee initially starts exploring potential nursing homes, dreading the thought of disrupting her life. However, as the once-estranged family becomes closer and Hank agrees to undergo testing, Lee eventually accepts the role of caregiver. As Bessie’s condition progressively declines and tests reveal that her sons are not suitable bone marrow donors, Lee comes to peace with the fact that it is now her turn to support her loved ones.
