Mary Magdalene (2018) is a biblical drama film, telling the story of its titular character. Set in Judea during 33 AD, Mary is a young woman from the village of Magdala by the Sea of Galilee. Strong-willed and determined to break away from societal norms that limit women to being wives and mothers, she longs for freedom. However, her rejection of a marriage proposal from family friend Ephraim leads her brother Daniel and father Elisha to believe she is possessed by a demon. As a result, they arrange an exorcism. In search of help, Elisha turns to Jesus – a healer who has become renowned among the local Jewish population for his teachings on love, peace, and freedom from oppression. When Jesus visits Mary and shares his gospel with her, she becomes captivated by his words, charisma, and personality. Despite facing opposition from her family, Mary decides to follow Jesus.
Mary meets several men who also follow Jesus: Peter, Andrew, James, John, and Judas. Each one has their own personal interests and ideas about Jesus’ teachings and his revolution. While Mary becomes more passionate about Jesus and his vision for the world and its people, Peter begins to resent her progressive views, believing that her presence weakens Jesus’ message. He notices that Jesus pays more attention to Mary as they make their way to Jerusalem. Together, Jesus and his apostles work to spread a message against the Roman Empire and Jewish authorities. However, events quickly take a dramatic turn against Jesus. The confrontation between Mary and Peter not only changes them both, but will have a profound impact on the entire world.
