The gothic horror film Mary Reilly (1996), directed by Stephen Frears, was adapted from Valerie Martin’s novel of the same name and written by Christopher Hampton. Upon her arrival as a maid in Dr. Henry Jekyll’s household, Mary develops a rapport with him and he starts relying on her help, much to the disapproval of his butler, Poole. Fascinated by the scars on Mary’s hand and neck, Jekyll examines them at her reluctance and learns they were caused by her abusive father locking her in a cupboard with rats during childhood. As Jekyll becomes increasingly immersed in his work at odd hours, he shocks the staff by announcing the hiring of an assistant named Edward Hyde who is given full control over the household.

One night, after waking from a nightmare, Mary follows Hyde as he leaves the house and witnesses him bribing the family of a young girl he viciously assaulted using a check signed by Jekyll. Later on, Hyde finds her in the Doctor’s library and makes a crude proposal while teasing her about her father. Mary is both intrigued and disgusted by his behavior. She quickly leaves without realizing that Hyde is getting rid of Mrs. Faraday’s decapitated head. After returning home to make arrangements for her mother’s funeral, Mary heads back to Jekyll’s house. In the alley, Hyde suddenly grabs her and pulls her close as he is being chased by the police. He informs her that she probably won’t see him again before giving her a kiss and vanishing into thin air.
