Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) is a film, filled with action and drama, written, produced, and directed by Peter Weir. It takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. In this film, Captain Jack Aubrey of HMS Surprise receives orders to intercept the French privateer Acheron. The enemy unexpectedly attacks Surprise near the coast of Brazil, causing severe damage. Despite returning fire, Acheron proves to be a formidable opponent. To escape, Aubrey orders the use of jolly boats to tow Surprise into a fog bank. Afterward, his officers suggest abandoning the chase since they are no match for Acheron. However, Aubrey refuses to let the enemy plunder British whaling ships. He decides instead to have Surprise refitted at sea to avoid a lengthy return to port for repairs. Later on, Acheron strikes again but is outsmarted by Aubrey’s use of a decoy raft and fake ship’s lamps in the night.

After following the privateer south, Surprise rounds Cape Horn and arrives at the heavily populated whaling grounds of the Galápagos Islands. Surgeon Stephen Maturin is fascinated by the islands’ unique plants and animals, and Aubrey grants him a few days to explore. However, their plans change when they come across survivors from a whaling ship, Albatross, that has been destroyed by the Acheron. In a rush to catch up to the privateer, Aubrey must cut short Maturin’s time ashore. As Surprise sails onward, they encounter calm weather for several days. Restless and disgruntled, the crew begins to turn to superstition for explanations. Midshipman Hollom, who is already disliked by his fellow sailors, is deemed a ‘Jonah’ – someone who brings bad luck – after an encounter with Nagle on deck. Insubordination leads to Nagle being flogged for his actions.
