Matchstick Men (2003)
Matchstick Men (2003) is a darkly humorous film directed by Ridley Scott and based on Eric Garcia’s novel of the same name. The story follows Roy Waller, a con artist with crippling Tourette syndrome and OCD, as he runs scams with his partner Frank Mercer. One day, Roy accidentally loses his medication and discovers his doctor has left town. This leads to a cleaning frenzy in his house that lasts until the next day. When Frank visits, Roy experiences a terrifying panic attack. Concerned for his well-being, Frank suggests he see psychiatrist Dr. Harris Klein who prescribes medication and helps Roy uncover memories from his past relationship with his ex-wife Heather, who was pregnant during their divorce.
At Roy’s request, Klein informs him that Heather had been called, revealing that he has a 14-year-old daughter named Angela. After meeting Angela and being reinvigorated by her youthful spirit, Roy eagerly joins forces with Frank for a long con. The object of their scheme is Chuck Frechette, an arrogant businessman who they plan to swindle using the pigeon drop method. One evening, Angela unexpectedly shows up at Roy’s home after getting into a disagreement with her mother. She decides to stay for the weekend before going back to school. While exploring his belongings, she triggers a moment of self-reflection for Roy, which he later brings up during therapy with Klein. However, things become tense when Angela returns home late one night and an argument ensues between them.
