Maverick (1994), directed by Richard Donner, is an American Western comedy film. In the American Old West, gambler Bret Maverick is en route to a major five-card draw poker tournament on the paddle steamer Lauren Belle. His intention? To prove that he is the best card player alive. However, he is $3,000 short of the $25,000 entry fee. To make up for this deficit, Maverick heads to Crystal River to collect on debts and earn some poker winnings. During one game in town, he crosses paths with two interesting characters – ill-tempered gambler Angel and young con artist Annabelle Bransford. Although Maverick manages to win a large sum from Angel, he is unfortunately forced to flee without his earnings. Traveling together in a stagecoach with Marshal Zane Cooper, they embark on their journey out of Crystal River.

Despite narrowly escaping death after their elderly driver suddenly passes away and aiding a group of robbed missionary settlers who were deceived by bandits posing as Indians along the way; Maverick’s determination remains unshaken. Maverick is presented with a tempting offer by the settlers to receive a portion of the much-needed recovered money for their mission. Meanwhile, one of the spinster missionaries suggests marriage to Cooper, but both men politely decline. As fate would have it, the trio and settlers find themselves facing a large band of real Indians, led by Maverick’s old friend Joseph. However, no one else in the group is privy to this connection. In an act of selflessness, Maverick pretends to sacrifice himself in order for the others to escape. He then attempts to collect the $1,000 that Joseph owes him.
