Ransom (1996)
Ransom (1996) is an American action thriller film directed by Ron Howard from a screenplay by Richard Price and Alexander Ignon. While billionaire Tom Mullen and his wife Kate attend a science fair, their son Sean disappears from their sight. He is taken to an apartment by Maris Conner, the Mullens’ caterer, along with brothers Clark and Cubby Barnes, and tech expert Miles Roberts. As it turns out, NYPD Detective Jimmy Shaker, who is dating Maris, is the man behind Sean’s kidnapping. The kidnappers send an email to Tom and Kate with a video of Sean requesting $2 million. Despite the kidnappers’ instructions not to involve authorities, Tom contacts the FBI through Special Agent Lonnie Hawkins in fear for his son’s life. In secret, Tom shares his suspicion that Jackie Brown, a union machinist who was imprisoned after one of Tom’s business controversies, may be responsible. They visit Brown in jail, but he denies any involvement and then physically assaults Tom.
The FBI proposes a plan for delivering the ransom, which Tom ultimately agrees to. A disguised Shaker calls Tom and gives instructions, leading him to meet Cubby at a quarry in New Jersey. However, when Cubby fails to provide information on Sean’s location as promised by Shaker, Tom refuses to hand over the money. A scuffle ensues and the FBI steps in, fatally shooting Cubby before he can reveal Sean’s whereabouts. Upon realizing that there is no guarantee Sean will be returned unharmed, Shaker arranges another drop-off. Initially agreeing to go alone with the money, Tom has a change of heart and instead publicly offers it as a reward for the kidnappers’ capture or death – while also clarifying that he will retract the reward and drop all charges if Sean is returned safely – making it clear that he will not simply hand over the ransom without repercussions.
