Maximum Overdrive (1986) is an American horror film written and directed by Stephen King. On June 19, 1987, as the Earth crosses the tail of a rogue comet, Rhea-M, previously inanimate machines suddenly come to life; insults are hurled by an ATM at a customer and a bascule bridge rises during heavy traffic, causing vehicles to plummet into the river or crash into each other. Pandemonium spreads as machines worldwide begin attacking humans. At a truck stop outside Wilmington, North Carolina, employee Duncan Keller is left blinded when gasoline sprays into his eyes from a pump. The waitress Wanda June is injured by an electric knife, while the cook and ex-convict Bill Robinson becomes suspicious when customers are electrocuted by arcade games in the back room. Meanwhile, at a Little League game, the coach is killed when a vending machine launches canned soda directly at him.
As one of the children tries to flee, the driverless road roller tragically strikes them. However, Deke, Duncan’s son, manages to escape on his bicycle. Meanwhile, Connie and Curtis, a newlywed couple, stumble upon a dead body at a gas station. In a frenzy, they drive away in their car when a tow truck attempts to harm them. As Deke rides through town, he witnesses terrifying acts of violence carried out by everyday objects such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, hair dryers and even an ice cream truck. At the Dixie Boy truck stop, tragedy strikes again as Duncan is killed by a garbage truck while searching for his son. Additionally, salesperson Camp Loman is brutally hit by a truck with a large Green Goblin mask on its grille and thrown into a ditch. Later on, multiple big rig trucks surround the truck stop in an ominous manner.
