Me Before You (2016)

Me Before You (2016) is a romance drama film, directed by Thea Sharrock in her directorial debut and adapted by author Jojo Moyes from her 2012 novel of the same name. Louisa ‘Lou’ Clark, a cheerful young woman, is hired as a carer for Will Traynor, a once successful banker and active sportsman who became tetraplegic after being hit by a motorcycle. Hoping to lift his depressed and cynical spirits, Will’s mother turns to Lou for help due to her bubbly personality. However, Will initially displays coldness towards her. Things become complicated when Will’s ex-girlfriend Alicia visits and reveals she is engaged to his former best friend Rupert. Despite these challenges, Lou remains determined to connect with Will.
As they spend more time together, she learns about his cultured and worldly nature – a stark contrast to her simple life with her parents or boyfriend Patrick. Through an overheard argument between Will’s parents, Lou discovers that he intends to go to Dignitas in Switzerland for assisted suicide in six months, as he cannot come to terms with living life as a disabled person. Her goal is to convince Patrick that life is still worth living by organizing trips and adventures. Patrick’s jealousy grows until he and Lou split up. When Will asks Lou to attend Alicia’s wedding, they fall in love. Heartbroken, Lou quits as Will’s caregiver and refuses to contact him. When Lou’s father tries to convince her to visit Will, he has already left for Switzerland, so she follows him there to witness his final moments.
