Meet Joe Black (1998)
The film Meet Joe Black (1998), directed and produced by Martin Brest, tells the story of media mogul Bill Parrish. He’s considering a merger while his daughter Allison plans his 65th birthday bash. The younger daughter, Susan, is a resident in internal medicine who is dating Drew, a member of Bill’s board. As Bill observes Susan’s relationship with Drew and realizes she may not be truly in love, he encourages her to wait for true love instead. During their helicopter ride, Bill hears a mysterious voice but tries to brush it off. Later at the office, he experiences chest pains and hears the voice again saying ‘Yes’. Meanwhile, Susan meets a captivating stranger in a coffee shop but leaves without getting his name.
Little does she know that just after their encounter, the man tragically passes away. That evening, Bill is once again summoned by the mysterious voice to a room. The voice introduces itself as “Death” and reveals that it now resides within Bill’s body. Death explains that he was intrigued by Bill’s passionate words to his daughter and admires his skills, experience, and wisdom. In exchange for guiding him on Earth, Death promises that Bill will not have to face death. They return to the dinner table where Bill is expected to introduce the stranger. Thinking quickly, he gives him the name “Joe Black” before joining the family. Joe struggles with basic human activities such as eating and using utensils but eventually learns to adapt.
