The film Meet the Feebles (1989), directed by Peter Jackson, follows the ambitions of a New Zealand puppet theatre troupe known as The Feeble Variety Hour. As they rehearse for their big break in television, tensions rise when star singer Heidi is insulted by pornographic director Trevor. Seeking support from her boss and secret lover Bletch, Heidi discovers his affair with performer Samantha. Meanwhile, newcomer Robert is immediately smitten with Lucille, and with the help of manager Arthur, the two become engaged. But drama ensues as Samantha reveals her involvement with Bletch to Heidi. Adding to the chaos, animal tamer Sid’s ex-girlfriend Sandy appears with news that he has a son named Seymour and plans to take legal action. In the midst of it all, Bletch and his henchman Barry engage in a drug deal with dealer Cedric.

Actor Harry is dealing with a mysterious and severe illness that has been deemed incurable. Sadly, journalist F.W. Fly has relentlessly bothered him about his condition and eventually exposes it to the gossip magazines. Meanwhile, Robert is assigned to help out knife-thrower Wynyard, who openly admits to being a troubled veteran of the Vietnam War. Under the guise of charitable donations, Wynyard manipulates Robert into giving him money for drugs. In the midst of a disappointing rehearsal and receiving criticism from director Sebastian, Heidi seeks comfort from Bletch. However, she walks in on Bletch with Samantha instead. Feeling hurt, Heidi initially refuses to perform but later changes her mind when Bletch pretends to have feelings for her.
