Melinda and Melinda (2004)
Woody Allen wrote and directed the American comedy film, Melinda and Melinda (2004), which first premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2004. During a dinner conversation, four writers debate the nature of life – is it inherently comedic or tragic? One writer shares a true incident he heard about a woman named Melinda who causes chaos at a couple’s dinner party, leading to affairs and a suicide attempt. As two playwrights in the group tell their versions of the story, one focuses on humor while the other takes a darker approach. In the latter version, Melinda stays with her friends Lee and Laurel after being widowed. However, due to her struggles with alcoholism and drug abuse, she ends up losing custody of her children.
Convinced that Melinda’s sadness is caused by the loss of her husband, Laurel takes it upon herself to help her find a new romantic partner. At a social gathering, they both develop feelings for the same man – Ellis Moonsong, a talented pianist and composer. Despite Melinda beginning a relationship with Ellis, he also starts seeing Laurel. On a date with Melinda, she confides in him about the true nature of her husband’s death – not an accident as believed, but at her own hand after discovering his infidelity. One night, Laurel discovers that Lee himself has been unfaithful with one of his acting students. When confronted, he brings up Laurel’s own affair with Ellis, which is overheard by Melinda. After confirming this truth to her, a distressed Melinda attempts to take her own life but is saved by Ellis just in time.
