Memento (2000), a neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan and based on the short story Memento Mori by his brother Jonathan Nolan, introduces us to a Polaroid photo of a deceased man. As we watch the sequence in reverse, the photo transforms back into its undeveloped state, ultimately returning to the camera before the man is fatally shot. The film then proceeds with alternating black-and-white and color scenes. The black-and-white portions feature Leonard Shelby, a former insurance investigator with anterograde amnesia caused by an attack from two men. In one of these scenes, Leonard speaks to an unidentified caller from his motel room. He recounts killing one of his wife Catherine’s attackers who raped and killed her but believes there was another attacker named ‘John G’ or ‘James G’.

Despite his belief, the police do not acknowledge the existence of this second attacker. Leonard relies on various methods, such as notes, photos, and tattoos, to keep track of new information. He remembers a fellow amnesiac, Sammy Jankis, from his time in the insurance industry. However, Leonard doubts the authenticity of Sammy’s condition and denies his insurance claim after tests show his inability to learn through repetition. Despite his wife’s pleas for help with her insulin shots due to her diabetes, Sammy accidentally gives her a fatal overdose. The color sequences are shown in reverse chronological order. In Leonard’s personal timeline, he makes the decision to get a tattoo of John G’s license plate. While going through his clothes, he finds a note that leads him to Natalie, a bartender who dislikes him for wearing her boyfriend’s clothes and driving his car.
