Memphis Belle (1990)
Directed by Michael Caton-Jones and written by Monte Merrick, Memphis Belle (1990) is a British-American war drama film. The B-17 Flying Fortress and her crew have been tasked with completing 25 missions in order to finish their tour of duty. As part of the squadron, they are assigned to attack a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 aircraft manufacturing plant in Bremen, Germany. While initially accompanied by P-51 Mustangs, the short-range fighters must later withdraw, leaving the bombers vulnerable on their journey to and from the target. The success of the mission is crucial as Belle would be the first to complete her tour in the Eighth Air Force. Army publicist Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Derringer plans to utilize Belle’s newfound fame to promote important war bonds.
As the formation flies over Germany, Belle assumes control when they begin to face flak and enemy aircraft. A smoke screen initially obstructs their view of the target, but they successfully drop their payload on the second attempt. On their journey back, the group is constantly under attack from German planes. Radioman SSgt. Danny Daly sustains severe injuries and an engine fire breaks out due to damage sustained in battle. Captain Dearborn takes a risky dive to put out the fire and save the plane. As if that wasn’t enough, additional damage knocks out the electric systems that power the landing gear. However, with quick thinking, the crew manually deploys the gear just before landing.
