Men (2022) is a British folk horror film written and directed by Alex Garland. It stars Jessie Buckley as a widowed woman who takes a holiday to a countryside village, only to be disturbed and tormented by the unconventional male residents, all played by Rory Kinnear. After her husband James commits suicide, Harper Marlowe seeks solace in the quiet village of Cotson. Troubled by James’ behavior, Harper attempts to message a friend about feeling unsafe. However, James catches her and reads the messages, causing him to react violently. In the midst of apologizing, he falls from an upstairs balcony to his death outside their flat. Harper is appalled and horrified as she discovers James’ body impaled on a metal fence nearby.

Arriving at a picturesque country manor that she had rented, Harper indulges in an apple from a tree in the garden before heading to the entrance where she is greeted by her landlord Geoffrey. He seems like a typical, albeit slightly eccentric, countryside dweller. After showing her around the house, their conversation becomes awkward as they discuss Harper’s marital status – she had booked the holiday under her married name but was traveling alone. Geoffrey hands her a large key for the front door, mentioning that locking doors is not a common practice in the village. Later on, while taking a stroll in the woods, Harper stumbles upon an abandoned railway tunnel. Excited by its echoey properties, she uses her voice to experiment with different pitches and sounds within its walls.
