The American sci-fi action comedy film, Men in Black (1997), is based on Lowell Cunningham’s comic book series and a popular conspiracy theory. At the Mexico–United States border, two men dressed in black suits known as Agent K and Agent D, intervene in a border patrol operation. They apprehend an extraterrestrial disguised as a human named Mikey who was attempting to cross the border. When Mikey attacks one of the patrol officers, K is forced to shoot him and use their memory-erasing device to cover up the incident as an underground gas pipeline explosion. With D choosing retirement due to his age, he asks K to erase his memories as well. Meanwhile, NYPD officer James Darrell Edwards III witnesses an unusually agile criminal escape and notices strange eye movements before he leaps off the Guggenheim Museum rooftop. During James’ interrogation, K arrives and recognizes his potential as a new partner based on his impressive skills in chasing down aliens.
K informs James about the origins of their organization, the Men in Black, which can be traced back to 1961 when Earth became a haven for alien refugees. As a secretive group, the MIB has the responsibility of monitoring and regulating these extraterrestrial beings, utilizing neuralyzers to erase any memories of alien encounters. Ready to join their cause, James assumes a new identity as Agent J and his previous civilian profile is wiped from official records. At the same time, an alien crash-lands in upstate New York and takes on the identity of a deceased farmer named Edgar. This ‘bug’ species is highly dangerous, resembling a giant cockroach. During their investigation at the site, J and K encounter the bug and learn that it has already killed two other aliens disguised as humans. These bodies end up at a morgue run by coroner Laurel Weaver in the city.
