Men of Honor (2000) is an American drama film directed by George Tillman Jr. In the movie, Carl Brashear leaves his life as a sharecropper in Kentucky behind to join the United States Navy in 1949. Prior to leaving, he made a promise to his father that he would never give up and would fight for what he wants. Carl serves on the USS Hoist as part of the crew, working in the galley. During his time on the ship, he witnesses Master Chief Petty Officer Leslie William ‘Billy’ Sunday’s courageous actions as he rescues a diver who had fallen overboard without an air line. Unfortunately, Sunday suffers from an air embolism which ends his diving career. Inspired by Sunday’s bravery, Brashear sets his sights on becoming not only the first black American Navy diver but also a master diver.

After much determination and perseverance, Carl is finally given the opportunity to attend Diving and Salvage School in Bayonne, New Jersey. Master Chief Sunday, the head instructor, is under orders from the school’s bigoted commanding officer, Mr. Pappy, to make sure Brashear doesn’t succeed. The other students, who are led by Dylan Rourke, won’t even share a room with Brashear. Despite having left school in seventh grade to work on his family’s farm, Brashear is determined to overcome his educational shortcomings. Luckily, he receives help from Jo, a female medical student who also works at the New York Public Library part-time. And during a salvage exercise gone awry, Brashear proves his diving skills by rescuing a fellow student after Rourke abandons him.
