The Christmas special, Merry Madagascar (2009), was first aired on NBC on November 17, 2009. It features the beloved characters from the Madagascar film series and is set between the first and second movies. After two months have passed since their previous adventure, Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria attempt to return to New York City in a hot air balloon. However, their plans are foiled by the lemurs who mistake them for the “Marauding Red Night Goblin” that visits their island every year. This leads to a chaotic situation as the “Goblin” showers coals over the island. In an effort to stop it, Alex shoots it down and discovers that it was actually Santa Claus throwing coal at Julien for his mischievous behavior. The crash causes Santa to lose his memory and forget about his duties. Determined to help out, our group of friends decides to deliver the presents themselves and uses Santa’s sleigh for transportation. Unfortunately, they encounter a problem when Santa’s reindeer refuse to take orders from anyone other than Santa himself. But with some quick thinking and using Santa’s magic dust, the penguins manage to make the sleigh fly again.
Their initial delivery attempts fail, leading them to leave the gifts at the appropriate post offices. Despite obstacles, they decide to push through with their deliveries after accidentally bringing happiness to a young girl by crashing into her apartment. On Madagascar, during the lemurs’ ‘Julianuary’ celebration, Santa rediscovers his talent for making toys. He creates presents for everyone, much to Julien’s dismay as he believes all attention should be on him. However, Julien claims ownership of the lemurs’ gifts and sifting through them alone only brings him sadness. Luckily, Santa’s suggestion of giving a gift cheers him up.
