Message in a Bottle (1999), a romantic drama directed by Luis Mandoki, is based on Nicholas Sparks’s novel of the same title. Theresa Osborne, a former reporter for the Chicago Tribune, discovers a compelling love letter in a bottle while vacationing in Cape Cod. Entranced by its contents, she shares it with her coworkers and without her knowledge, they publish the letter in their newspaper. The response is overwhelming and among the many letters received is one with an attached note addressed to Catherine on the same notepad and written in the same style as the original. Another reader sends a similar letter, not addressed to Catherine but still typed on the same notepad. Eventually, through careful investigation using the typewriter and letterhead used, they locate Garrett Blake – who lives quietly near his father on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Theresa heads to the Outer Banks in order to further her research. However, upon meeting him, they share a mutual attraction and begin getting acquainted. She initially plans to discuss the original purpose of her visit, but worries about potentially losing him and decides to delay the conversation. In addition to being physically separated by hundreds of miles, there is an additional obstacle: Garrett cannot seem to let go of Catherine, who has passed away. Meanwhile, Theresa’s career flourishes as her romantic ‘message in a bottle’ tale gains traction without directly mentioning names. Eventually, Garrett makes the journey to Chicago to see Theresa and spend time with her young son. Despite initially seeming content together for a day, things take a turn when he discovers his letters in her nightstand and becomes upset.
