The film Metal Lords (2022) is a teen comedy-drama, written by D. B. Weiss and directed by Peter Sollett. It tells the story of two high school buddies, Hunter and Kevin, who share a love for metal music and decide to form their own band, going against societal expectations. Metal enthusiast Hunter Sylvester often jams with his introverted best friend Kevin Schlieb, who only plays a single drum in the school’s marching band. During one of their practices, Kevin witnesses Emily, a sensitive Scottish student, having a meltdown and quitting the band due to her lack of skill with the clarinet. Later that day, he brings Hunter to Clay Moss’ party and tries to blend in while Hunter feels out of place. As Kevin gets drunk and flirts with Kendall, Hunter finds himself in a conflict with jock Rocky “Skip” Hoffman.
Later, Hunter discovers the school is hosting a “Battle of the Bands,” spurring him to register Skullfucker – his and Kevin’s band. To fund their preparations, Hunter covertly uses his father’s AMEX card to purchase $13,500 worth of equipment, including a full drum kit. Meanwhile, Kevin diligently practices every day after school, learning Hunter’s chosen songs by ear. In this process, he notices Emily’s talent for playing cello with the same level of dedication. As they share mutual interest in music, Kevin gives Emily a copy of the metal playlist assigned to him by Hunter as “homework.” On the other hand, Hunter attempts to find a bassist through auditions but to no avail. He also has multiple confrontations with Skip along the way.
