Miami Vice (2006)
The movie Miami Vice (2006) was written, directed, and co-produced by Michael Mann. Based on the hit TV show from the 1980s, for which Mann served as executive producer. While undercover at a club to arrest a pimp named Neptune, Miami-Dade detectives James ‘Sonny’ Crockett and Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs receive an urgent call from their former informant Alonzo Stevens. Worried for his wife’s safety, Stevens reveals he is leaving town and asks Rico to check on her. It turns out that Stevens had been working as an FBI informant but has now been compromised. The detectives quickly contact FBI Special Agent in Charge John Fujima to warn him about Stevens’ safety. With the help of vehicle tracking and aerial surveillance, Crockett and Tubbs track down Stevens on I-95.
Stevens shares that a Colombian cartel was aware of the FBI’s partnership with Russian undercovers (now deceased). The cartel threatened to kill Leonetta using a C-4 necklace bomb unless he confessed. Upon learning of Leonetta’s death over the phone, Rico tells Alonzo not to go home. Devastated, Stevens takes his own life by stepping in front of a semi-truck. While on their way to the murder scene, Sonny and Rico receive a call from Lt. Martin Castillo directing them to meet him downtown. There, they are personally introduced to Fujima, the leader of the Florida Joint Inter-Agency Task Force composed of the FBI, DEA, and ICE. Crockett and Tubbs express their frustrations to Fujima about the mistakes made and question why the MDPD was not involved.
