Michael (1996)
The American comedy fantasy film, Michael (1996), was directed by Nora Ephron. The National Mirror is a tabloid publication known for its coverage of unexplainable phenomena. Upon receiving a story tip about a woman coexisting with an angel in Iowa, editor Vartan Malt selects three staff members to investigate: Frank Quinlan, Huey Driscoll (photographer and owner of the Mirror star Sparky the Wonder Dog), and Dorothy Winters (hired to replace Driscoll). During their visit to the small town’s boarding house of Pansy Milbank, they meet Michael – a winged and cookie-scented being with a surprising fondness for cigarettes and sugar. Despite his untidy appearance at first glance, Michael’s boorish behavior leaves a less than desirable impression on the team.
When asked about his angelic status, he declares himself an archangel, and boasts to Pansy about defeating Lucifer in the War in Heaven. After Pansy’s sudden passing, Frank and Huey decide to accompany Michael to Chicago. Michael reveals that this was part of his initial plan. As they journey, Michael gradually discloses his earthly mission – to bring Frank and Dorothy together, despite both having negative experiences with love. Tragically, Sparky is struck by a vehicle and perishes, but Michael resurrects him. In doing so, he exhausts his reserves of miracles and begins to weaken. They arrive in Chicago just in time for Michael to catch a glimpse of the iconic Sears Tower before vanishing (an item on his bucket list).
