Michael Clayton (2007)
Michael Clayton (2007) is an American legal thriller feature film that marks Tony Gilroy’s directorial debut. The movie revolves around the life of Michael Clayton, a ‘fixer’ for a prestigious law firm in New York City. He uses his extensive connections and knowledge of legal loopholes to benefit his clients. One evening, Michael interrupts a poker game to assist a client who had hit a pedestrian with his car in Westchester County. On his way back home, while passing by some barren trees atop a hill, he notices three horses and stops to take a closer look. Little did he know that behind him, an explosion occurs in his car. This incident took place just four days after Michael had gotten involved in handling Arthur Edens’ manic episode. Arthur was the lead litigator defending U-North, an agricultural products conglomerate, in a six-year-long multi-billion-dollar class action lawsuit. During the deposition for the case, Arthur’s mental state becomes unstable, putting the firm’s reputation at risk.
In order to salvage the situation, Michael rushes to bail out Arthur from jail in Milwaukee after discovering that he has stopped taking his medication. Michael approaches Marty Bach, the managing partner of the firm, seeking a loan to cover a failed restaurant investment made with his troublesome brother Timmy. In response, Marty mentions potential rewards for fixing the issue with Arthur and also warns of dire consequences if Michael is unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Karen Crowder, U-North’s general counsel, uncovers a confidential memo from the company that links their weed killer to numerous deaths and the ongoing lawsuit. She promptly brings this information to Don Jeffries, U-North’s CEO who is responsible for signing the memo. After learning of the situation, Don connects Karen with two hired assassins who proceed to track and bug Arthur’s apartment and phone.
